Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar (1898-1976) was an eminent man of letters in Marathi. A prolific writer who was recipient of the Dnyanpeeth award, he tackled all literary forms effectively. His literary works have been rendered into various Indian languages. He had also made his mark as a literary critic. Sahityashilpi: V.S. Khandekar is an anthology of his articles on about seventeen well known authors in Marathi. The anthology which covers life sketches of writers from late nineteenth century to the later half of the twentieth may be said to be a brief introduction to the history of Marathi literature. The life sketches cover salient features of the literature, philosophy, style of each person. Included here are dramatists, biographers, poets, journalists. 

‘साहित्यशिल्पी’ वि. स. खांडेकर लिखित व्यक्तिलेख संग्रह होय. यात त्यांनी आपल्या पूर्वसूरी साहित्यिकांबद्दलचा त्यांच्या मनात असलेला आदर व्यक्त केला आहे. तो करीत असताना खांडेकर साहित्यिकांच्या व्यक्तिमत्त्वाबरोबर त्यांच्या साहित्याचा परामर्षही घेतात. आपल्या पूर्वसूरी व समकालीन साहित्यिकांबद्दल इतक्या बहुसंख्येने आणि उदारपणे लिहिणारे खांडेकर मराठीतील दुर्मीळ व्यक्ती  होत. ‘साहित्यशिल्पी’मध्ये साहित्यिकांच्या जीवन, साहित्य, विचार, शैली, सौंदर्य अशा अनेक अंगांनी परिचय होत असल्याने त्या त्या साहित्यकाराचं समग्र चित्र  व चरित्र प्रकट करण्याचं सामथ्र्य या ग्रंथात आहे. सन १९३० ते १९७६ अशा व्यापक कालखंडातलं हे लेखन म्हणजे समकालीनांबद्दलची आस्था, जिव्हाळा आणि प्रेमाचे अकृत्रिम आविष्करणच! वर्तमानात अचंबित करणारा हा वस्तुपाठ अपवाद असला तरी अनुकरणीय खरा.
