संघ-संस्थापक डॉ. केशव बलिराम हेडगेवार जी के हृदय में देश की पराधीनता की पीड़ा बाल्यावस्था से ही इतनी प्रखर थी कि वे तभी से देश को स्वतन्त्र कराने के अथक प्रयास में जुट गये थे। वे नागपुर में ‘स्वदेश बान्धव’ के पश्चात् बंगाल की ‘अनुशीलन समिति’ जैसी प्रसिद्ध क्रान्तिकारी संस्थाओं के सदस्य रहे। वे भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के कार्यकर्ता और पदाधिकारी भी थे। 1921 और 1931 के असहयोग और अवज्ञा आन्दोलनों में उन्होंने बढ़ चढ़ कर भाग लिया और वे कारावास भी गये। डाक्टर जी का चिन्तन और दृष्टि अन्य नेताओं से अधिक व्यापक, मौलिक व परिपक्व थी। जहाँ 1921 के लाहौर अधिवेशन से पूर्व कांग्रेस के शीर्ष नेता केवल ‘औपनिवेशिक स्वराज्य’ की ही बात करने का साहस कर पाते थे, सुभाषचन्द्र बोस व डॉ. हेडगेवार ने पूर्ण स्वराज्य की बात उठायी।
डॉ हेडगेवार के मौलिक चिन्तन और दूरदृष्टि का परिचय देने वाला उनका 1935 में पुणे (महाराष्ट्र) के तरुण स्वयंसेवकों के समक्ष दिया गया भाषण इस पुस्तक का मुख्य आकर्षण व प्रेरणा बिन्दु है।
