Le vieux Khmer, membre de la grande famille môn-khmère de l'Asie du Sud-Est, était la langue de l'ancien Cambodge dont le territoire englobait aussi le Sud Vietnamien, certaines parties de la Thaïlande, du Laos et de la Malaisie. Connu grâce à de nombreux textes gravés sur la pierre et retrouvés sur la sphère géographique sus-détaillée, il est exclusivement "épigraphique". Il a été étudié par de grands savants. C'est vers ce moment qu'on commence à s'interroger sur le besoin d'un dictionnaire du vieux khmer, dont le premier texte avait été édité à la fin du siècle dernier.
