I made two mistakes when this waa first released in 1991; pre-ordeing, paying full price for te hardcover and then reading this. It's a waste of resources to print and market this book in any format; not to mention the wasted time and money of the readers who buy this awful book. Critics and fans of the original novel felt that it was bad and it was panned by but clay critics worldwide. It's in the top five on my list of the worst books I've read and I'd give it zero stars if I could!

Of course it can't compare to GWTW, but it is a favorite of mine just the same. Although, I can't stand the miniseries they tried to make from this book. Once you have grown up watching Leigh and Gable, no one else will ever be as good.

Left wanting more after GWTW, this book develops the characters and events to an unexpected and exciting ending point. Scarlett's vacillating journey from self-centered girl to caring adult awareness is intriguing and believable. Even if it's a bit long it is still worth the read.

About the author

Historical fiction author Alexandra Ripley was born on January 8, 1934. She majored in Russian at Vassar College and worked at numerous publishing houses before becoming an author. She published her first novel Who's That Lady in the President's Bed? using the pseudonym B. K. Ripley in 1972. She has written many best sellers but is perhaps best known for writing Scarlett, the sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind. Despite negativity from critics, the book was very popular with the public and the TV miniseries it spawned was the highest rated multi-part dramatic special of 1994. She died in Richmond, Virginia on January 10, 2004.
