Shirow Masamune é um dos mangakás mais proeminentes do movimento cyberpunk que tomou o Japão nos anos 1980. Nascido em 1961, em Kobe, começou sua carreira em 1983 com Black Magic. A partir de 1985 contabilizou grandes sucessos do gênero como Dominion e Appleseed. Masamune viria a publicar sua obra mais famosa em 1989. The Ghost in the Shell se tornou sucesso mundial, foi adaptado em filmes animados para o cinema e para séries de TV e vídeo. Dois anos depois do lançamento de The Ghost in the Shell, Shirow Masamune emplacou Orion. No começo dos anos 2000, o autor voltou ao universo da Major Kusanagi. Lançou The Ghost in the Shell 2 e a versão 1.5 de sua obra original de 1989.
