Contudo também fez uso dos versos decassílabos introduzidos em Portugal por Sá Miranda em 1527 que também trouxe a estrutura de soneto. Escreveu em português e em castelhano adotando uma postura racional para abordar os temas relevantes de sua época. Seus sonetos são reconhecidos como uma das maiores obras do Classicismo.
