In the early 20th century, South Bend, Indianas population more than tripled. Established industries like Studebaker and the Singer Sewing company rose to unprecedented heights of production, new businesses took root, and immigrants flooded into the area. John Palmer, a reference librarian in the Local History and Genealogy Room of the St. Joseph County Public Library prior to his retirement, is a member of the Northern Indiana Historical Society, the South Bend Area Genealogical Society, and the Support the Fort Group, Inc. He is the author of South Bend: Crossroads of Commerce, also published by Arcadia.
