Though the British Empire outlawed the slave trade in 1807, many British ships continued the practice for decades along the eastern coast of Africa. His writing regularly appears in the Guardian, Smithsonian Magazine, and Newsweek. He is the author of Squadron: Ending the African Slave Trade. He lives in Ohio and Minnesota.
