About this ebook

In the new Rome, duplicity and death reign supreme.

It's the mid-11th century, and the Byzantine Empire dominates the world. Within the walls of its great capital, Constantinople, treachery, debauchery and power politics are part of the lives of the ruling elite.

Thrust into this mix is the Viking adventurer, Harald Hardrada. In the court of the deranged emperor, Michael the Fifth, danger lurks at every turn, and Harald soon becomes a pawn in the various factions' thirst for power.

Can he survive this dangerous place, and turn his mind towards regaining what is rightfully his?

A poorly written story that is over contrived, It lacks basic research and continually misuses language. The characters are empty; the men all of improbable proportions and the women all too beautiful and sex- crazed. Yates should pursue any other talent he has since his ability in writing does not rate highly.

great story, breathtaking plot, pretty decent characters but I hate teasers and that last chapter (24 years later) annoyed me.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the writing style, and although there were a few errors which could have been picked up in proof-reading, these were infrequent and did not take away from the enjoyment - a good standard for a free eBook. I like the way the story develops from the viewpoints of different characters. Characters are well constructed and the plot develops at a good pace, with twists and turns encouraging continued reading. The climax at the end does not disappoint. Good descriptive detail for battle scenes, and the steamy bits (this book is quite sexually graphic, but only on occasions and the context does relate and add to the story I feel). I'm not hugely knowledgeable about this era of Byzantine history, but in my opinion the author must have researched the period, figures and events quite thoroughly, and successfully weaves an enjoyable novel around known historical facts, filling in the blanks through well conceived artistic license. A most enjoyable read
