When the authorities soon after descended on his banks and his books, there was nothing left: Jaffe had stripped the lot.

As Kinsey pushes deeper into the mystery surrounding Wendell Jaffe's pseudocide, she explores her own past, discovering that in family matters as in crime, sometimes it's better to reserve judgment.

BOTTOM-LINE: Is it fraud? Is it murder? Is it suicide? . PLOT OR PREMISE: Kinsey's old insurance partners hire her to find a guy who faked his suicide five years before to get out from under a Ponzi scheme indictment. . WHAT I LIKED: Kinsey heads off to Mexico to find the guy, spots him, comes back, and starts inserting herself over ten days into the life of his ex-family, all of whom thought he was dead. Add in a current girlfriend, an ex-cop, and an old business partner, and there are lots of things happening at the same time. And just for fun, Kinsey finds out she has family up around Lompoc. . WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There is an almost ridiculous story about one of the sub-characters -- he's introduced initially as a buffoon, and then later as an almost master-criminal, and in neither instance is he either. While Kinsey's new family interactions are a bit of a distraction, the real challenge is with the banal ugliness of the ex-suicider's family interactions, particularly a young pregnant girl with a baby. . I fell in love with this author while I was a solo OTR truck diver needing a break from continuous overplayed new artists and needing a break from the oldies (but goodies). Never was one for reading more than the usual snippet in a magazine. All my English teachers just loved how I enjoyed reading so much. So, when looking for something legal to pass the long boring day's/night's when traveling by myself and no one else running with me to help pass the time I came across Sue Grafton audio books on CD's at the major chain truck stops. I really enjoyed the simple yet a little bit out there main character (whom reminded me a lot likemyself) . The story lines where simple but with added fun/twist regarding Kinsey Millhone personal life outside of being a PI. So Mr @paulsadler who has graced us with a review on majority of her books. You won't get a feedback, compensation, nor a "like" or "friend request" from her because unfortunately Ms Sue had to join others in heaven. RIP #suegrafton

Working my way slowly through the Grafton opuses (opii?). I think this is the best so far.
