ચારિત્ર્ય પર કર્મની અસર સંસ્કૃત ધાતુ ‘કૃ’ એટલે કરવું, એ પરથી કર્મ શબ્દ થયો છે. કર્મ એટલે તમામ કાર્યો. પારિભાષિક અર્થમાં કર્મ શબ્દથી કાર્યની અસર પણ સમજાય છે. અધ્યાત્મ વિદ્યાની દૃષ્ટિએ જોઈએ તો અમુક વખતે કર્મનો અર્થ તેનાં ફળ થાય છે - જેનું કારણ આપણાં પૂર્વકર્મો હોય. કર્મયોગમાં કર્મ એટલે કાર્ય એવો અર્થ સમજવાનો છે. માનવજાતનું ધ્યેય જ્ઞાન મેળવવાનું છે. પૂર્વની ફિલસૂફીએ આ એક આદર્શ આપણી સમક્ષ મૂકેલો છે. માનવજાતનું ધ્યેય મોજમજા નથી પણ જ્ઞાન છે.
