In this book, Osborne extends his work in Educating Citizens and takes the reader through the work of modern pedagogies and the most recent research on effective teaching. He focuses particularly on "discovery learning," "critical pedagogy" and a "feminist pedagogy" - drawing from a wide range of classroom practice -- and builds on this foundation the key elements of an approach to teaching in which democratic citizenship is the core of student experience.

KEN OSBORNE is a member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. He taught for twelve years in the Winnipeg school system before joining the university. He has written extensively in the areas of history teaching, labour studies, political education and peace education.
