I couldn't stop reading this book. The gritty prose smattered with sesquapidelian vocabulary made the plot read like a perfectly arranged bouquet of tragedy and comedy; horror and romance; and, most of all, amity and isolation. The first person view elicits parallels to Lolita, in which a sexual pariah is humanized and related to, but it also paints the supporting characters just as complex and relatable. It is often difficult to be absorbed in a book; however, I was completely consumed by this one.

Teddy Wayne, the author of Loner, The Love Song of Jonny Valentine, and Kapitoil, is the winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award and an NEA Fellowship as well as a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award, PEN/Bingham Prize, and Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He writes regularly for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, McSweeney’s, and elsewhere. He lives in New York.
