Danau ini tepatnya berada di cekungan terendah antara Gunung Merbabu, Telomoyo, dan Ungaran. Rawa Pening memiliki ukuran sekitar 2.760 hektar yang menempati empat wilayah kecamatan, yaitu Kecamatan Ambarawa, Bawen, Tuntang, dan Banyubiru. Menurut cerita, danau ini terbentuk akibat suatu peristiwa yang pernah terjadi di daerah tersebut. Kisah tersebut adalah Legenda Rawa Pening.
Pening Swamp is a lake that is one of the water atrractions in Semarang Regency, Central Java. This lake is precisely located in the lowest basin between Mount Merbabu, Telomoyo, and Ungaran. Pening Swamp has a size of about 2,760 hectares which occupies four sub-districts, namely Ambaran, Bawen, Tuntang, and Banyubiru subdistricts.
