Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt is a noted author, educator and grief counselor. Recipient of the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Death Education Award, he serves as Director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colorado and is a faculty member at the University of Colorado, Department of Family Medicine. He is the author of a number of best-selling books on grief and loss. Among his titles are Companioning the Bereaved, Understanding Your Grief, and First Aid for Broken Hearts. A frequent guest of the media, Dr. Wolfelt has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Larry King Show, and the NBC Today Show.Dr. Wolfelt presents numerous educational workshops each year for hospices, schools, funeral homes, community groups and a variety of other organizations. He also teaches weeklong courses for bereavement caregivers at the Center for Loss, located in the beautiful mountain foothills of Fort Collins, Colorado, and winter seminars in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Shaw is dually trained as a physician and mental health counselor. He was also the primary caregiver for his wife of 36 years, Rebecca, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease at age 54 in 2008, and died at age 62 in 2016. Dr. Shaw is a professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, as well as the founder an director of the Memory Counseling Program (MCP) in Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Health's Sticht Center on Alzheimer's Research and Health Aging. He is the author of the book "Keeping Love Alvie as Memories Fade: The Five Love Languages and the Alzheimer's Journey."
