"The Alchemyst" by Michael Scott captured my attention when I had first heard about it from a librarian friend trying to motivate me to read. It is an fiction adventure in modern San Francisco about twins Sophie and Josh Newman with a man named Nicholas Flamel trying to protect the secret for eternal life written in a book. Dr. John Dee plans to steal the book for horrible deeds and Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time. The theme of this book is about loyality and trust, and how that will both come and break between the twins in times of crisis.
This book was really different compared to other books I have read. It was about adventure-which I liked, and it occured in modern San Francisco, which was something I could relate to. I liked how the author wrote this book with a twist on adventure. It wasn't like the other Harry Potter books that everyone knew, but something unique that drew in my attention. Pages of "The Alchemyst" will keep coming one after another once you start reading.
Michael Scott started writing in 1982. His first book was "Irish Folk & Fairy Tales", written in 1983. More than twenty-five years later, the book is still in print. "The Alchemyst" has been sold in 37 countires, and movie rights have been offered.

This one sets itself apart from the multitude of fantasy books mainly because of its intellectual tone. I recommend it for strong readers who really enjoy fantasy with a more serious tone.
Twins Sophie and Josh are working at their summer jobs when one ordinary day a stranger and his magical servants show up where Josh works and all kinds of magic and mayhem break out. It turns out that Josh's boss is Nicholas Flamel, who's been hiding out w/ his wife for 500 years from the evil stranger, John Dee. Flamel has this codex, or magical text, that would allow Dee to awaken the Dark Elders, ancient gods and goddesses who hate humans and would be happy eradicating them and "rebooting" the world. Dee steals the codex that day, but not before Josh ripped out the two most important pages before escaping. When Dee learns that these pages are missing, he comes after Josh, Sophie, and Flamel with a very powerful goddess bent on revenge.
