About this eBook

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Detective Harry Bosch joins LA's elite Open/Unsolved Unit to help piece together the mysterious death of a teenage girl.
He walked away from the job three years ago. But Harry Bosch cannot resist the call to join the elite Open/Unsolved Unit. His mission: solve murders whose investigations were flawed, stalled, or abandoned to L.A.'s tides of crime. With some people openly rooting for his failure, Harry catches the case of a teenager dragged off to her death on Oat Mountain, and traces the DNA on the murder weapon to a small-time criminal. But something bigger and darker beckons, and Harry must battle to fit all the pieces together. Shaking cages and rattling ghosts, he will push the rules to the limit -- and expose the kind of truth that shatters lives, ends careers, and keeps the dead whispering in the night . . .

A. I guess you could say that. I grew up in Los Angeles and that's his territory. Plus, his plots are plausible and well-paced. Q. Is Harry Bosch the main character in this book? A. Yes. Michael gives a little talk at the end of the audiobook, telling us how Bosch had retired from the Los Angeles Police Department and had then intended to start his own private investigation firm. But he got bored and also didn't have the access he needed when he was with LAPD. So, luckily, the new chief of police has invited him back to work on closed cases. Q. Is he still with Kiz Ryder as his partner? A. Yes. Kiz had been a desk jockey with Chief Irving since Harry left the police force, but now she has a chance to get back into action with him, and she's ready, willing, and able. Q. Is there suspense or mystery or both in this book? A. Both suspense and mystery, but more of the latter than the former. Harry and Kiz draw a case eleven years old, in which a teenage girl was murdered behind her home. Her father is black and her mother white, but after the murder, the parents go separate ways. The father ends up on Skid Row and the mother stays at the house. The murdered girl was their only child. Q. So when did you guess who the perpetrator was? A. Not until the end of the book. It was an unexpected ending. That's where Connolly excels over other writers in the genre. Q. So you recommend the book? A. My wife and I listened to the unabridged audiobook while driving from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and back. The CD version takes about ten hours. It made the ride a lot easier. I can't say how the book version would be, but I would guess it would be a page-turner. I recommend either version.
