She celebrates everyday heroes like the Coconut-Plucker, the Cook of Sweet Meats, and the Buffalo-Herdsman. With delicate diplomacy, cultural change is signaled by events such as the abandoning of the firewood hearth and the arrival of the television.

Chamalee Namal Weeratunge is a physician and Infectious Disease Specialist. She moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1999 to complete her Residency in Internal Medicine and then to San Antonio, Texas, for a fellowship in Infectious Disease. She practices in Kyle, Texas, and has lived in Austin, Texas, with her family since 2004.
