1. Blood Moon

The moon above would shine and shine and when it shone it lit up all the bog-pools, so you could walk about almost as safe as in the day. But when the moon didnтАЩt shine, then out came the things that dwell in the darkness and they went about seeking to do evil and harm and mischance and mischief to all that werenтАЩt safe at home by their fireplaces. Ghosts and ghouls and creeping terrors and crawling horrors, they all came out on nights when the moon didnтАЩt shine.

Well, it so happened that a girl had to travel across the bog lands one night. She was very troubled because she had heard all the stories people told about the evil doings that transpired on the bogs.

тАЬIтАЩll see for myself,тАЭ she said. тАЬMaybe itтАЩs not as bad as folks make out.тАЭ

So, sure enough, that fateful night, out she stepped, wrapped up in a black cloak and with a black hood over her long blonde hair. She went straight to the bogтАЩs edge and looked about her. There was water here and water there, waving tufts of grass and trembling mounds of earth and great black snags all twisted and bent.

On she went, almost into the middle of the bogs and, looking about her, she could see queer things lurking in the darkness, grinning and grimacing at her as she passed. Evil eyes glowered from the darkest corners and the will oтАЩ the wisps danced about with their lanterns swinging in the distance. But the moon shone down brightly and its light kept the dark things at bay.

However, the girl had no idea that she had chanced to go out across the bog lands on the night of a Blood Moon. ThatтАЩs what they call it when there is a total eclipse of the moon. The moon passes behind the earth and its light is blotted out, leaving just a red glow in the sky where the moon should be. And so it came to pass that when the girl was only half-way across the bogs, the moon faded out and the blood moon appeared and she was plunged into darkness.

2. Jar of Hearts

My high school teacher told us a scary story that he claimed was true. He said it happened to a good friend of his that was living in rural Arkansas.

One day, the guy was shopping in the supermarket when he happened to bump into a girl in the checkout line. They started talking and seemed to really hit it off. The girl was very pretty and she had a nice personality. She also seemed to be a religious girl, which was exactly the type of girl the guy was looking for.

They exchanged numbers and a few days later, the guy called her. They began to call her every evening and they would have long conversations that lasted deep into the night. She seemed to be the perfect girl and the guy started falling head over heels in love with her. The only strange thing was that she ended every phone conversation with a prayer.

Eventually, they decided out on a date. The girl called him and told him to come to her house to pick her up on Saturday night. She told him that he had to come at exactly 7:30 pm and not a minute later. She said that if he was even a minute late, she would break up with him and he would never see her again. The guy was a little shocked by this, but he really liked the girl so he agreed to be there at 7:30 sharp.

3. The Black Cross

One day, Danny and Mitch told the rest of us about a creepy urban legend they heard regarding a house that was near our school. The father of the family had gone insane and hung himself. When his wife and kids discovered the body, they were so traumatized that they couldnтАЩt stay in the home again. They abandoned the house and it had lain vacant ever since.

We were so curious that we immediately decided to check it out. The next day, we all snuck out of school after lunch and went to the house. When we got there, we were surprised to find that it was just a normal-looking home. You would never have suspected that someone had committed suicide in the place.

Danny and Mitch went in first and the rest of us followed close behind. We went into the kitchen first and rummaged through the drawers and cupboards to see what was inside. There was nothing much of interest. Going upstairs, we explored the bedrooms, but most of the furniture had been removed.

Just then, Eric noticed something in the hallway. There were two small windows at the very end. They were high up, almost touching the ceiling. It seemed strange because there was another room behind the windows, but no door to access it.

4. Broken Window

When I took out my mobile phone, I realized that I had no signal. We were completely stranded, deep in the mountains. I had no idea how to fix the car and it was growing dark. There was no gas station for miles and the road was not used very often.

It was clear that we would have to spend the night in the car and hope that some passing motorist would stop and give us a ride. The sun was going down and it was beginning to get very cold. An eerie silence descended over the mountain and all I could hear was the wind rustling through the trees.

My daughter went to sleep in the passenger seat. I closed my eyes and was starting to drift off as well, when I heard a strange noise.

5. Angel of Death

The box was about two meters long and very old. The wood was damp and rotten. There was something written on the side, but it was too worn and faded to make out. The box was nailed tightly shut and there didnтАЩt seem to be any way of opening it.

When I showed it to our boss, he told me to contact the priest and tell him about it. When I managed to get the priest on the phone and described the box to him, he became silent for a long time. Then, he told me he would come over in the morning and deal with it. In the meantime, he asked me to leave it somehere safe.

I carried the box into the church and left it in a corner. I figured it would be safe there overnight, since the church was not in use. By that time, it was almost evening, so I packed up my things and went home.
