This report provides the results of a survey study to define new roles which the federal government might assume in the field of corrections. Those surveyed showed good consensus for the following needs - diversion of cases, now at the federal level, to state and local systems, clarification of federal and state jurisdictions to avoid overlap, federal grant in-aid programs to assist states in developing modern correctional systems, federal coordination of criminal statistics, federal support of on-going research and dissemination of developments through a national information service, federal sponsorship of educational programs for all levels of corrections personnel, changes in the federal sentencing and paroling statutes to allow greater flexibility. The report includes a listing of the survey respondents and an overview of the federal system of corrections to date.
