Compiles from the experience of five separate overland and river expeditions into South America; mostly by canoe on streams more or less conected to each other. The expedition took the author from Santa Isabel, on the Rio Negro, in Brazil, to Ciudad Bolivar, on the Orinoco, in Venezuela; from San Fernando, on the Apure, to the headwaters and return, of the Orinoca via the Atabapo and the Casiquiare. The author also traveled down the Portuguesa, in Venezuela, and on into Panama, the Salado and Feliciano rivers in Argentina; as well as waters into Columbia and Chile.
