This novella is a prequel to the author's Killer Instinct Series. Samantha Dark is an FBI Profiler. On her first field case, she 's aware of her ability to get into the mind of a killer, to find their victims, and to pull the trigger when necessary. Facing the latest serial killer to become headlines, Samantha is forced to shoot the killer to death. Fortunately, his latest victim is found alive. Former SEAL Blake Gamble is Samantha's partner. He's a play-by-the-book enforcer and wants nothing more than to take down the bad guys and put them away. Both have secrets .... and the attraction between them is heating up. And they both know the boundaries they must keep in order to maintain not only their professional partnership, but to protect the secrets they have. Samantha is having a hard time not feeling guilty about taking a human life, but she thinks the case is over. It isn't. This is a short story/novella of approximately 60 pages, so it's a real quick read. For such a short story, there's a lot packed into it. It's suspenseful with a surprise ending. No cliff hanger even if this is the beginning of what looks like a very good series. The characters are likable, if not secretive.
