David Hall was a student at North Texas State University in 1966 when he volunteered for the army and for Viet Nam, where he served during 1968 and 1969 as an artillery forward observer with the Ninth Infantry. He received the Purple Heart for (minor) wounds suffered in combat, the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, and the Air Medal for flying around the delta country south of Saigon in door-less helicopters. A native of Texas, he now lives in Colorado and thinks often of his experiences in that frustrating war and ponders what, if anything, it all meant.
