A fascinating look back to a time when narrow gauge train and steamer were the principle means of reaching Tahoe, and genteel luxury merged with rustic charm in the grand hotels of Tahoe Tavern, Al-Tahoe, and Glen Alpine Springs. The author gives detailed descriptions of trips to such locations as Rubicon Springs, Hell Hole, and the Five Lakes, at a time when pack horses and a guide would take the visitor into the heart of an almost virgin wilderness. The language is somewhat florid by today's standards, but the images it invokes are so majestic as to be worthy of the effort. The readers enjoyment will be enhanced by some familiarity with the area, enabling a comparison with region of a century ago, but this book should prove worthwhile for newcomers as well. It is an especially good read if taken with you on a visit to the lake, to be read in comfort at night while reminiscing over the day's adventures.
