In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

Ratings and reviews

Far too much attention given to middling people, places, events. Sadly, as much as i wanted to like the book, as most purists would, i found the whole dull in spots, at times rushing thru to the good parts. Over all, the movies were much better, though i'm usually the one decrying the deviation from source material.

I bought LOTR a while back with intent of reading it after I fished my last book but now the store won't let me download the book to my phone......... not really sure what that's all about but it's very irritating. This isn't a review of the book just a review of the store

The story is known to many and while enjoyable I found far too much walking described. My chief reason for a 3 however is because the appendix and additional resources of this edition are not useful in their tablet form. If you want this edition get the print and paper
