His field research brought formerly obscure musicians of the American South and Appalachia into the mainstream and helped foster the blues revival of the 1960s. He was also a poet, novelist, and record producer who worked with blues giants Buddy Guy and Junior Wells as well as the psychedelic band Country Joe and the Fish.
