Less than three decades after the United Colonies declared independence from Britain and became the first independent nation in the Western Hemisphere known as The United States of America, there was another declaration of independence resulting in the formation of the first Black republic in the world and the second republic in the Western Hemisphere by way of the first and only successful, self-emancipating slave revolt, making The Republic of Haiti the first independent nation in the Caribbean. Instead of being respected and celebrated for these phenomenal "firsts", Haiti has been the subject of what appears to be a fervid grudge that has spanned two centuries and continues to this day. When juxtaposing America's quest to break away from British colonialism against Haiti's quest to break away from French colonialism, what could Haiti have possibly done different from America that merited perpetual ill treatment from the beginning of the 19th century to this very day?
