As others have remarked, it's a shade darker than the first book. It's a well crafted story, but a lot of it kept me reading, not because I was enjoying it, but because I wanted it to end. However the mythology of the universe as a whole feels vast and is thoroughly engaging. 3.5 would be a more accurate rating, but I'll round up to 4.
