Про цю електронну книгу

Gabriel John Utterson, a prosecutor in London and a close friend of the respectable Dr. Henry Jekyll, begins to witness strange occurrances that cause him concern for his old friend. When he hears about an odd and violent man, known as Edward Hyde, who pays for his excesses with cheques signed by Dr. Jekyll, Utterson fears his friend is being blackmailed. However, as he tries to track down Jekyll and the mysterious Mr. Hyde, he learns that the truth is much more disturbing than his originally thought.

An early example of “split personalities” and doppelgängers in literature, the story of Jekyll and Hyde has permeated pop culture since it was originally published in 1886. Author Robert Louis Stevenson purportedly wrote the tale within a matter of days after coming up with the beginning of the story in a dream.

This Chevalier Classics e-book edition contains a live table of contents and illustrations by Charles Raymond Macauley from a 1904 edition of the book originally published by Scott-Thaw. Illustrations were inserted in the e-book at locations that are as close as possible to the placement of the images in the original printed book.

Про автора

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish author who penned famous works such as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Treasure Island, and Kidnapped. Many famous authors have cited him as a source of inspiration, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London, Rudyard Kipling, Vladimir Nabokov and J. M. Barrie. Despite being extremely popular during his lifetime, Stevenson's work has often been overlooked in literary criticism because it was largely placed in the category of children's literature. However, in more recent decades, Stevenson's literary talent has been more greatly appreciated, and his works have remained widely translated and extremely popular since his time. Stevenson died in 1894 at the age of forty-four of a cerebral hemorrhage.
