A Financial Times Best Thriller of the Year 2023

If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot.

But some places don't play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane's experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place - a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West - but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

Not really sure what to say about this book, good or bad. Definitely starts out like a standard espionage story then goes off on another unexpected tangent altogether. Almost has three or four plots in it that could have been stand alone books.

I read this one on the strength of I am pilgrim. To say it was a disappointment is an understatement. Four chapters that jump from place to place and genre to genre. just a confusing mess. First two parts were at least readable. when it got into time travel, alien spores and the apocalypse. It was just a step too far for me.

What can I say...his 1st book was outstanding. I started this second book with high expectations, it started out as I thought it would as an absolute page turner. But the twist in it. I'm not sure about. And the ending unfortunately seems as a rushed piece of work like so many other books. I wouldn't say let down but definitely not as good as his 1st book.
