Grete Minde spielt zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts. Der Roman beruht auf wahren Begebenheiten, die Fontane 1878 in Tangermünde recherchierte. Es handelt von einer jungen Frau, die aus Hass und Enttäuschung die altmärkische Stadt Tangermünde an der Elbe anzündet. Eine Grete Minde lebte dort tatsächlich, einen Erbschaftsprozess gab es auch, und 1617 kam es in der Stadt zu einem Großbrand. Dabei brannten auch große Teile der dortigen St.-Stephans-Kirche. Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und approbierter Apotheker. Er gilt als bedeutendster deutscher Vertreter des deutschen Realismus.
