I first read this novel 20+ years ago. I loved it then, and my admiration for this work by Thomas Hardy has not been diminished by time. While there are a few passages where he digresses in order to expound on certain philosophical and theological ideas fashionable in his era, and a rare condescending tone creeps in now and then, when speaking as narrator about womanhood, Hardy has complete sympathy for his central character, Tess. In fact, "Tess" has aged well and has much to say to modern readers.

My favorite romance book besides weathering heights it of a young girls struggles from farm girl to find out shes blue blood but not to be treated as such I adored it as a young woman with eyes full of romance and still love it, I will read it again and again ! Was so delighted when I found I could take it digitally with me
