The origin and development of Thomas' tale is discussed, before moving into a discussion on shamanic elements in ancient European mythic belief.
The continuance of shamanic practice in the European folk tradition into the Early Modern Era is explored, as well as how these elements are demonstrated in this tale.
The second half of the book is the author's retelling of the story. And, the entire volume is richly illustrated throughout.

Carolyn Emerick researches and writes about the history, myth, and folklore of Northern Europe. She has been studying European history, culture, literature, and mythology for over twenty years, has a bachelor's degree in literature, university training in historical study, and post-graduate training in archival studies.
