Tipedi ("3 strands") introduces a novel poetry form in Marathi. A tipedi is a 3 line poem, like Japanese Haiku that holds 5, 7 and 5 syllables, and additionally, rhymes in at least two adjacent lines. This sequence of 235 tipedis introduces a novel game of creating a new poem by taking a cue from the previous one. The tipedis given here are on information and culture, musings, nature, love and hope, melancholia, and philosophy. Readers will find reflections of their own life in these poems.
The game is: one person composes a Haiku, the next one takes one word out of the previous poem and composes the next Haiku, and so on, अंताक्षरी-style. It turns out that three persons started playing this game. The name तिपेडी is a play on words also--वेणीच्या ३ पेडी--refer to the 3 authors. The prime mover of this project is Ambuja, the other two authors are Manjusha, a colleague of Ambuja from Shivaji University and Sushama, a childhood friend of Manjusha who is a Hindi teacher. Pradnya, the publisher is Ambuja’s classmate.The choice of words, styles, authors' writings are rendered in red, green and blue; respectively. On reading the poems you might begin to note that the three authors each have quite distinct choice of words, styles, even personalities. There are 236 poems in the sequence.
The Preface is by Mrs Gouri Mahulikar, retired Sanskrit professor of University of Mumbai. This article by itself is an erudite and elegant piece of Marathi writing. The second part of the Preface document is a conversation between Ambuja and a well-known Marathi haiku poet, Professor Gangadhar Meshram, retired Chemistry professor of University of Mumbai.
