I sold this set of books door to door for Britannica in the DC area in 1961. My first reaction was "how do I get a set of these books!?" They said if I sold so many sets I'd get a free set. Well, I sold one set, decided I wasn't a salesman but bought a set. I've read most of them. They are (or were then) the basis of a Liberal Arts curriculum at St. Johns's College in Maryland. I was a sailor for 44 years (24 USN and 20 USMM) and so took one or two volumes with me to sea on every tour. The first two volumes in the set I sold was the SYNTOPICAN (Synthesis of Topics Contained) which was promoted as an "index of ideas." Look at the set as a great conversation over the centuries, each writer assumed to have read the authors before him. You can follow, in the Synntopican, the idea of love or war or marriage throughout the course of history. The set, although it did not contain the Bible begins there then the Iliad and the Oddyssey on through to Herman Melville. This set is your complete liberal education. It came with a 16 volume reading guide which kept me from bailing while plowing through Aquinas and Kant ;-) Hard going.
