Este volume pretende reunir um conjunto de reflexões referentes à ideia de ‘Crime e violência’, como são expressos na Antiguidade greco-latina e na sua recepção. Depois de um texto introdutório que explora a terminologia específica deste assunto, seguem-se doze artigos que cobrem um lapso temporal que vai da época arcaica da Grécia à contemporaneidade portuguesa. A inclusão de diversos géneros literários permite também observar diferentes modelos estéticos na abordagem do assunto. Épica, tragédia, retórica, romance, dão voz a diferentes contextos em que a violência é central, bem como ao entendimento que cada sociedade retira desse fenómeno humano.

 

This volume wants to put together several reflections allusive to the idea of ‘Crime and violence’, as they are expressed by Greek-Roman Antiquity and later in its reception. After a first text of introduction, exploring specific terminology, twelve articles follow covering a period of centuries from archaic Greece till Portuguese modernity.
The inclusion of different literary genres allows us to observe the different aesthetic models under which this subject is expressed. Epics, tragedy, rhetoric, novel give voice to different contexts where violence is central, as well as to the sensibility each society has of this human phenomenon.

About the author

Francisco de Oliveira. Professor Catedrático da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, onde se doutorou em História da Cultura Clássica. Cultura Romana; foi Presidente do Conselho Diretivo (1996-2002); da Euroclassica (European Federation of Associations of Teachers of Classica Languages and Civilisation); da APEC (Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Clássicos). Apresentou e organizou inúmeras conferências e seminários em Portugal e em numerosos países, com publicações em português, espanhol, francês, inglês e alemão. Entre as publicações incluemse traduções de Platão; a dissertação de doutoramento Idées politiques et morales de Pline l’Ancien (Coimbra, 1992, IX + 438p.); e Europatria (Coimbra, 2013, 538p.). Dedica-se em especial ao teatro antigo, à teoria política na antiguidade e aos estudos clássicos em Portugal em contexto europeu.

He is Tenured Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra. He was corresponding member of the of the Real Academia de Bones Letres da Catalunha, President and Treasurer of Euroclassica (Fédération Européenne des Associations de Professeurs de Langues et de Civilisations Classiques), and member of the Editorial Board of the journals Humanitas, Ágora and Máthesis, Advisor to the University of Salamanca’s journal Logo, Revista de Retórica y Teoría de la Communicación and Academic Consultant for the journal Letras from  the Pontifical University of Campinas, Brazil. He is currently preparing annotated translations of De re publica and De legibus by Cicero, of the Phoenissae by Seneca and of the letters of Pliny and Trajan. In the international context he is assisting in the production of a DVD about the teaching of Latin in the European Union (directed by P. Ieven, Belgium), and in a publication on the situation of classical languages in Europe (directed  by J. Bulwer, UK), and he heads the collaborative Europatria Project involving several European countries. He specialises in the thought and political ideas of Classical Antiquity, in the relationship between theatre and society and in the classical tradition in Portugal. Maria de Fátima Sousa e Silva é Professora Catedrática do Instituto de Estudos Clássicos da Universidade de Coimbra. Desenvolveu, como tese de doutoramento, um estudo sobre a Comédia Grega Antiga (Crítica do teatro na Comédia Grega Antiga), e, desde então, tem prosseguido com investigação nessa área. Publicou já traduções comentadas de outras nove comédia de Aristófanes, além de um volume com a tradução das peças e dos fragmentos mais significativos de Menandro. Tem colaborado regularmente com diversas Universidades estrangeiras, em Espanha, França, Grécia, Brasil, como docente e conferencista. Destacam-se, entre outras publicações: Ensaios sobre Eurípides, Lisboa, 2005; Ésquilo, o primeiro dramaturgo europeu, Coimbra, 2005; Aristófanes. Comédias I (coordenação e colaboração), Lisboa 2006; Furor. She is Full Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and a researcher at the Centre for Classic and Humanistic Studies at the same university. Her research interests are in the areas of: translation and study of Greek theatre, of Aristophanes and Menander, Aeschylus, and Euripides; Greek historiography and specially Herodotus; and the study of existence of classical themes in Portuguese dramaturgical texts. She has often collaborated both as a teacher or visiting lecturer at several foreign universities, namely in Spain, France, Greece, and Brazil. Tereza Virgínia Ribeiro Barbosa atualmente é professora associada da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), ministrando cursos na Faculdade de Letras e na Faculdade de Belas Artes/Teatro. Atua tanto na graduação quanto no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos Literários da UFMG. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Tragédia Grega e pesquisa, principalmente, os seguintes temas: tradução, épica grega, drama satírico, mitologia, literatura clássica e outras literaturas (portuguesa e brasileira), tradição e renovação na literatura. Participou da elaboração do Dicionário Grego-Português e desenvolve trabalhos também nas áreas de Teorias da Tradução, Teoria da Literatura. Traduziu Os Icneutas, os sátiros rastreadores de Sófocles (2012), Editora UFMG.

She is currently an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) lecturing both at the Faculty of Letters and Faculty of Fine Arts/Theatre. There she teaches Literature Studies at both the graduate and post-graduate level. She has vast experience in the field, particularly Greek tragedy, and her research is focused on the following areas: translation, Greek epics, satirical drama, mythology, classical literature, Portuguese and Brazilian literature, and tradition and renewal in literature. She took part in the writing of the Greek-Portuguese Dictionary and also works in the areas of theory of translation and literature. She translated Os Icneutas, os sátiros rastreadores de Sófocles [“The Ichneutae, the tracking satyrs of Sophocles”] (2012), Editora UFMG.
