ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯು ತನ್ನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಆದಿಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಎರಡು ಲೇಖನಗಳು 'ದೇಶಭಾಷಾ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ'ವೆಂಬ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಹೊಸ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ತೊಡಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಜತೆಗೆ, ಈ ಕಾಲದ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಭಿತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ವಿಶ್ವಾತ್ಮಕ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಕ್ಕೂ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳು ಏನು, ಅವೆರಡು ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ನಡುವಣ ವ್ಯವಹಾರಗಳು ಯಾವ ಮಾದರಿಯವು - ಮೊದಲಾದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಈ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ತುಂಬ ಹೊಸ ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿವೆ. ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಚರ್ಚೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಇವತ್ತು ಎದುರಾಗಿರುವ ಜಾಗತೀಕರಣವೆಂಬ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನಕ್ಕೂ ನಾವು ತುಂಬ ಹೊಸದೇ ಆದ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುವುದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೆ - ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಪರೋಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಮಹತ್ತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಈ ಎರಡು ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

Sheldon I. Pollock is a scholar of Sanskrit, the intellectual and literary history of India, and comparative intellectual history. He is currently the Arvind Raghunathan Professor of South Asian Studies at the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University. He was the general editor of the Clay Sanskrit Library and is the founding editor of the Murty Classical Library of India.

Born 24th April 1960, Akshara K.V. got his BA in literature at Sagara, and then got theatre training at National School of Drama, New Delhi and MA in theatre arts from the Workshop Theatre, University of Leeds, UK. He is associated with the Ninasam group of organizations as a teacher and theatre director as well as administrator. He also heads Akshara Prakashana, a prominent publishing house in the Kannada language. He has written 6 plays, directed more than 60 productions in Kannada, has taught theatre at Ninasam and elsewhere, and has presented papers in various seminars. He has published more than 30 books in Kannada, related to literature, theatre, cinema, culture and has translated essays and books related to culture and society from English. Three of his books have received the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi award, and he is also a recipient of the Karnataka Nataka Academy fellowship and the central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He has also received VM Inamdar Award, Kanthavara Kannada Sangha Award, BH Sridhara Prashasti and Alva’s Nudisiri Prashasti for his work in theatre and literature.

Prithvi Datta Chandra Shobhi is a social historian and political commentator. He teaches History and Humanities at Krea University. Prithvi studied history and literature at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and at the University of Chicago, from where he obtained a PhD. He is the editor of three books and has published widely on the literature, culture and politics of Karnataka.
