DENIS DONOGHUE was born in Tullow, Ireland, in 1928. He took his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at University College, Dublin, and received an M. A. at Cambridge University when he joined the teaching faculty there. He was Professor of Modern English and American Literature at University College and is now University Professor at New York University, where he also holds the Henry James Chair of English and American Letters.
