As Franklin’s story becomes a means to plumb the frozen depths of his own life, Dickens finds a young actress thawing his heart.

Richard Flanagan was raised in Tasmania, where he still lives. He is the author of DEATH OF A RIVER GUIDE, THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING, GOULD'S BOOK OF FISH, and THE UNKNOWN TERRORIST. He has also covered the Australian government's ongoing reconciliation with that country's Aboriginal peoples in THE GUARDIAN (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/feb/12/australia). He is married and has three children.
