Spread across the nineteenth-century colonial world was a tangled web of cultural and economic networks. In groundbreaking research, Tony Ballantyne positions New Zealand within these ‘webs of empire’, connecting Gore and Chicago, Māori and Asia, India and newspapers, whalers and writing. His work breaks open the narrative of colonisation to offer sharp new perspectives on New Zealand history.

Bringing together essays from two decades of prolific publishing on international colonial history, Webs of Empire demonstrates why Tony Ballantyne is one of the most influential historians working in New Zealand today.

O autorze

Tony Ballantyne is a Professor of History at the University of Otago and is Head of the Department of History and Art History. He is also Director of the recently established Centre for Research on Colonial Culture at Otago.

Born and raised in Dunedin, Tony won a Prince of Wales scholarship to Cambridge University where he completed a PhD on British imperial history. Before returning to New Zealand, he taught at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

His earlier research focused primarily on British India, especially the networks that linked that colony to Britain, Ireland, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, as well as the history of the Sikh community. More recently, his work has increasingly turned to colonial New Zealand, especially the cultural and intellectual history of Otago and Southland.

Publications include Orientalism and Race (2002) and Between Colonialism and Diaspora (2006) and he has edited or co-edited several volumes, including Disputed Histories: Imagining New Zealand's Pasts (2006).
