While I found the first couple of chapters a bit slow, it was most likely due to the fact that I had learned the lessons he spoke of already. I found the chapters on Mansfield Park onward to be very engaging and captivating. I couldn't put the book down afterward. Deresiewicz does an eloquent job of juxtaposing his own life with the storylines and characters of Austen. After the last page, I picked up all my Austen novels and began re-reading them again with a fresh perspective.

WILLIAM DERESIEWICZ is a widely published book critic and the author of Jane Austen and the Romantic Poets. He was nominated for National Magazine Awards in 2008, 2009, and 2011 and the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2010 and 2011.
