Basil Santoine, blind celebrity lawyer to the wealthy and powerful, is returning from the West with his daughter Harriet and clerk Avery after settling the affairs of his murdered client, Gabriel Warden, when, while the train is snowed in among the Rockies, an attempt is made on his life. The prime suspect is the mysterious young man, Philip Eaton, who receives coded telegrams and refuses to divulge his past or explain his apparent connection with Gabriel Warden, but both Harriet and her father believe his protestations of innocence, so Philip finds himself an involuntary guest at the Santoine estate in Chicago while his host investigates their guest -- or until Philip's true identity catches up with him.
