《茶花女》是小仲馬根據巴黎當時的一個真實故事撰寫而成，是小仲馬的代表作。隨後，小仲馬又寫了20餘部劇作，現實主義傾向更為鮮明。其中著名的作品有：《半上流社會》（1855）、《金錢問題》（1857）、《私生子》（1858）、《放蕩的父親》（1859）、《歐勃雷夫人的見解》（1867）、《阿爾豐斯先生》（1873）、《福朗西雍》（1887）等。小仲馬的劇作大多以婦女、婚姻、家庭問題為題材。作為法國現實主義戲劇的先驅者之一，其劇作富有現實的生活氣息，以真切自然的情理感人，結構比較嚴謹，語言通俗流暢。由於在小說、戲劇創作方面取得的巨大成就，小仲馬於1875年當選為法蘭西學院院士。
