越南國土為狹長型，面積約33.1 萬平方公里，位於中南半島東側，東臨東京灣與南海，北接大陸，西面寮國與柬埔寨，南臨南海與暹羅灣，位於太平洋與印度洋的通道位置，甚具地緣政經重要性及戰略價值。
從1975 年越戰結束，到1986 年之後一連串的經濟改革及對外開放政策，越南不斷地在進步，經濟表現也越來越亮眼。越南陸續透過開放的外人投資法、重整國內金融體系，再加上1994 年美國宣布解除禁運，皆對當地的經濟發展有重大進展。
除此之外，越南積極加入區域經濟整合，也提高了經濟發展的空間，如1995年加入東南家國家協會（ASEAN），成為東協第七個會員國。之後並於1998 年加入亞太經濟合作會議（APEC），並於2007 年正式成為世界貿易組織（WTO）的第150個會員國。
