그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)(1812) : 그림 형제 동화집(Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm)의 원제는 독일어로 Kinder- und Hausmärchen, Grimms Elfenmärchen, 즉 그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)입니다. 1812년 최초로 86편을 모아 초판을 발행하였으며, 이후 이야기를 추가하며 증보판을 발행하였습니다. 1857년 출간한 일곱 번째 증보판은 211편의 이야기를 포괄하고 있으며, 한국인에게도 친숙한 백설공주, 잠자는 숲 속의 미녀, 라푼젤, 신데렐라, 헨젤과 그레텔, 늑대와 일곱 마리 아기 염소, 개구리 왕자, 브레멘 음악대 등 수많은 유럽동화를 포괄하고 있습니다. 동화책 자체도 워낙 유명하지만, 몇몇 작품은 디즈니 애니메이션으로 전 세계적으로 흥행하였습니다. 단 애니메이션의 줄거리는 원작과 큰 차이가 있습니다.

 

그림 형제 이전에도 독일 민담을 최초로 수집한 요한 카를 아우구스트 무샤우스(Johann Karl August Musäus)의 Nachgelassene Schriften(1791), 아힘 폰 아르님(Achim von Arnim)과 클레멘스 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano)의 민요모음집 소년의 마적(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)(1805) 등이 출간된바 있습니다만, 언어학자인 그림 형제가 평생에 걸쳐 채록하였을 뿐 아니라 수차례의 증보판을 통해 끊임없이 가다듬은 ‘현존하는 최고의 유럽동화집’은 단연 그림 형제의 공로라 할 수 있습니다. 그림 형제 또한 동화를 본격적으로 집필한 프랑스 작가 샤를 페로(Charles Perrault)의 대표작 - 빨간 두건, 잠자는 숲 속의 공주, 장화 신은 고양이, 신데렐라, 푸른 수염, 엄지 동자, 다이아몬드와 두꺼비들, 당나귀 가죽, 어리석은 세가지 소원 등의 일부를 각색해, 자신의 동화집에 싣는 등 그의 영향을 크게 받았습니다. 그림형제의 동화집 출간 이후 그의 작업에 영감을 받아, 세계 각지에서 자국의 이야기를 수집한 책이 잇달아 출간되었습니다. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! 헐리우드 영화 그림형제(The Brothers Grimm)(2005) : 그림 형제의 동화집을 소재로 한 책과 영화, 애니메이션 등은 셀 수도 없이 많습니다만 21세기에는 아예 동화집을 채집한 그림형제란 ‘인물’을 캐릭터로 삼은 창작물이 등장하기 시작합니다. 2005년 개봉한 헐리우드 영화 그림형제(The Brothers Grimm)(2005)는 맷 데이먼(Matt Damon)과 히스 레저(Heath Andrew Ledger)가 분한 그림형제가 19세기 프랑스의 지배를 받는 독일에서 마법의 숲 마르바덴의 거울여왕과 싸우는 판타지 영화입니다. 평생 의자에 앉아 문헌을 조사한 학자를 ‘사기꾼 퇴마사’로 분장시키다니, 헐리우드의 상업성은 놀랍지 않을 수 없습니다. 거울여왕역의 모니카 벨루치(Monica Bellucci)는 독일도, 프랑스도 아닌 이탈리아인입니다만... 예쁩니다. 실제 촬영은 프랑스도, 독일도 아닌 미국과 체코에서 진행되었습니다. 영화에는 동화집에 묘사된 라푼젤 성(체롯의 탑), 늑대인간, 정령 등이 뒤죽박죽 섞여 등장합니다. 화려한 캐스팅과 함께 영화팀이 창조해낸 온갖 볼거리가 끊임없이 등장해 눈길을 사로잡기엔 부족함이 없으나, 영화에 대한 평은 그리 좋지 않습니다. 국내에서 관객 72만명 동원.

 

미국 NBC 드라마 그림형제(Grimm)(2011~2017) : 미국 NBC에서 제작한 시즌제 드라마 그림형제(Grimm)는 오컬트 판타지 수사물입니다. 작품에서 그림(Grimm)은 괴물을 알아볼 수 있는 특별한 능력을 가진 ‘그림(Grimm) 가문의 후예’로 등장하며, 베센(Wesen)이란 괴물과 대립합니다. 각기 다른 능력을 지닌 베센(Wesen)은 그림형제 동화 속 괴물을 모티브로 창작되었으나 매우 흉측해 ‘어린이 동화’와는 거리가 멉니다. 2011년부터 방영을 시작하였으며, 2017년 시즌 6로 종영하였습니다. 국내에서는 채널CGV를 통해 방영되었습니다.

 

“A certain king had a beautiful garden, and in the garden stood a tree which bore golden apples. These apples were always counted, and about the time when they began to grow ripe it was found that every night one of them was gone. The king became very angry at this, and ordered the gardener to keep watch all night under the tree. The gardener set his eldest son to watch; but about twelve o'clock he fell asleep, and in the morning another of the apples was missing. Then the second son was ordered to watch; and at midnight he too fell asleep, and in the morning another apple was gone. Then the third son offered to keep watch; but the gardener at first would not let him, for fear some harm should come to him: however, at last he consented, and the young man laid himself under the tree to watch. As the clock struck twelve he heard a rustling noise in the air, and a bird came flying that was of pure gold; and as it was snapping at one of the apples with its beak, the gardener's son jumped up and shot an arrow at it. But the arrow did the bird no harm; only it dropped a golden feather from its tail, and then flew away. The golden feather was brought to the king in the morning, and all the council was called together. Everyone agreed that it was worth more than all the wealth of the kingdom: but the king said, 'One feather is of no use to me, I must have the whole bird.”

“어떤 왕은 아름다운 정원을 가졌고, 정원에는 황금 사과를 품은 나무가 있습니다. 사과의 숫자는 엄격하게 관리되었으며 익기 시작할 무렵 매일 밤 사과 하나가 없어진 것을 발견하였습니다. 왕은 분노하였고 정원사에게 나무 아래에서 밤새도록 감시하라고 명령했습니다. 정원사는 큰아들에게 감시하도록 시켰으나, 12시경에 그만 잠이 들어 버렸습니다. 그리고 아침에는 사과가 또 하나 사라졌습니다. 둘째 아들이 감시를 명받았으나, 그 또한 자정에 잠이 들어 버렸습니다. 다른 사과가 사라졌습니다. 이번엔 셋째 아들이 망을 보겠다고 나섰습니다. 처음에는 정원사가 반대하였으나, 결국 승낙했고, 셋째 아들은 나무 밑에 몸을 눕혀 사과를 감시하였습니다. 시계가 12시를 쳤을 때, 그는 공중에 바스락거리는 소리를 들었고, 황금 새 한 마리가 날아왔습니다. 그리고 사과가 부리로 찰싹찰싹 쪼을 때 셋째 아들은 벌떡 일어나 화살을 쏘았습니다. 그러나 화살은 빗나갔고 황금 깃털 하나만을 떨군 채 도망쳤습니다. 황금 깃털은 왕에게 진상되었고, 평의회가 소집되었습니다. 참가자들은 황금 깃털이 나라가 가진 모든 재산보다 더 값진 것이라고 평가하였습니다. 그러자, 왕은 이렇게 말하였습니다. `하나의 깃털은 나에게 쓸모가 없습니다. 나는 한 마리의 온전한 황금새를 원합니다.”
