About this ebook

Smith was the first Princeton alumnus to hold the office of President of the college and was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1785. In the "Essay" he attempted to show that physical variety in the human species was due to natural environmental causes, particularly climate, and dismissed the polygenist argument that each of the different races of man had sprung from their own stock.
