This is a volume of three books. The first two are rather mediocre fantasy action books. The author often asserts, rather than demonstrates character relationships and traits. That may be due to the non chronological nature of these books. Stories about how a pair of characters met, and came to trust each other is in another book, that is later in the volume. By the time the third book rolls around, the author has done enough showing that the marital difficulties and the racial strife have real bite.

I really enjoyed these books. A different slant to the fantasy novel but still very high fantasy.

This is the series that spawned much of the Vlad Romanov clan in Nero
