I thought the book was well-written and tense. Nick and Isabelle were both strong, independent and well-developed characters. Overturning the friction between Nick and Isabelle into a loving relationship while Nick was assigned to protect Isabelle and her family, was anticipated but enjoyable to read. It was gratifying to read the emphasis that Kathryn Shay placed on the importance of family in this story. There was some questions left unanswered regarding Trey - where did he get his money to buy the house in which he and his mother lived, what was his reaction when he learned Isabelle married someone else? Overall, the novel was very good. I would rate it 4.8.

Will the man or the Agent win? The first in the series is always difficult as you have a lot scene setting to do - I enjoyed this but not as much as Ms Shays other series - America's Bravest and Hidden Cove. I did enjoy the interactions between Nick and Isabelle and as always they are well written strong characters, plenty of drama, intrigue, steamy moments, funny quips and tension - but it was lacking the pull of the other two series - cannot put my finger on exactly what is missing but I didn't lose myself in this book. Yes there were scenes that were a little unbelievable and if they had happened Nick would certainly not be promoted as he is.....but honestly this is fiction and we read for enjoyment not for technical accuracy. I love Kathryn Shay's books normally so I will be reading the second in the series and hoping it is stronger and hooks me.

Unusual in that it"s written from the perspective of the family of the man in power and the people whose jobs are to protect them. Even the smallest clue may lead to solving the mystery.
