Taiwans Geschichte ist von einer Reihe an Besatzungen gekennzeichnet. Viele Mächte wollten das Eiland haben und ihrem Kolonialreich hinzufügen. Weshalb die Insel so beliebt war und besetzt wurde, wie es die europäischen Mächte und Japan einnahmen und wie es an China zurück ging, soll hier behandelt werden. Das heutige Taiwan ist der Nachfolger der einst 1912 gegründeten Republik China und bedarf eines eigenen Werkes. Denn nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg herrschten die Nationalisten unter Chiang Kais-hek diktatorisch über die Insel. Erst nach Chiangs Zeit kam der Aufbruch in die Demokratie.
