Sie war mir nachgeschlichen, hatte mich beobachtet, und fasste nun mit einem Gesichtsausdruck, wie er hämischer und triumphierender nicht sein kann, nach meinem Arm, um mich herauszuziehen. Doch ich schleuderte sie zurück. "Fassen Sie mich nicht an!" Sie verstand, was mich an ihr entsetzte, und wich scheu zurück. Sie weckte die Aufseherin des Schlafsaals, auch eine Strafgefangene, und nun bestürmten sie mich mit Fragen. Ich antwortete nicht. Was ich an Tüchern hatte, feuchtete ich an, band es mir um meine blutenden Hände und Füße, die ich mir beim Sturz aufgerissen hatte, legte mich in mein Bett und . . . schlief. Wohl spürte ich, dass sie mehrmals in der Nacht zu mir herantraten und mich ansahen; sie glaubten wohl nicht recht an meinen Schlaf. Der Morgen kam. Die Frauen ringsum erwachten, scheue Blicke, höhnisches Lachen, zynische Bemerkungen, nicht ein Wort, nicht eine Miene der Teilnahme, wohin ich auch sah.
